Back To School
Pat Zifferblatt | August 4, 2008

It seems hard to believe that in a few short weeks, schools will open. The ads promoting back-to-school specials started right after the 4th of July. It’s been two years since Better Life dedicated an entire month of Bulletins to healthy eating for children; it’s time to do it again for a couple of reasons.

First, it’s easier to prevent a problem rather than treat it, and this is especially true for obesity. How many of you have battled your weight for decades? The younger your children, the better the odds you’ll be able to prevent weight gain. Even if they have begun to gain weight, there’s still a lot you can do to help them achieve a healthy body weight.

Second, Better Life Unlimited has just finished two classes of Cooking with Kids at the local community college. These sold-out classes provided real insight about children and cooking and exercise. We’ll include those observations this month as well.

One thing that you should know: Better Life Unlimited does not endorse dieting for children. While we want children to eat healthier, restricting calories is not a solution. Rather teaching them to eat better, providing healthier food choices and not purchasing high-fat and highly refined foods is the way to go. As parents, you lead your children to health--you don’t push them into it. You just might find that you’re eating better as well.
