They're Watching You
Chester J. Zelasko, Ph.D. | May 12, 2003

I recently spent all day at a conference dedicated to childhood obesity. While obesity is increasing in adults, it's growing even faster in children. And with the excess weight, there's alarming growth among children in the diseases that go along with obesity, such as diabetes and high cholesterol.

One of the statistics was staggering: if both parents are overweight, the children have close to an 80% chance of being overweight. Genetics explains part of it, but there's no question that lifestyle choices play the major role.

Simply put, children emulate what they see. They will follow your lead when it comes to food, exercise, and recreational activity. As if you needed any more motivation, keep this in mind: it's not only your health at stake, but that of the children in your life as well. As you work toward your better body, choose wisely--because they're watching you.
